Here’s an Innkeeper Update from the Prairie House Manor Bed & Breakfast, located in De Smet, South Dakota:

Greetings from DeSmet, South Dakota, home of Laura Ingalls Wilder.  We were concerned about booking rooms this spring because of the economy but, to our surprise, we have been very busy. We have noticed a trend: it seems that much of our business has been from “local” folks from a 2-state radius.

We figure to save money in this tough economy, people are staying closer to home and are still getting a nice few days’ getaway. It has been a pleasant surprise, and one we are very thankful for. It has been a great start to our season.

We wanted to share this with all of you to both encourage the B&B Owner, and to encourage the Vacationer to take a short trip, and stay at a B&B near you.

I was looking through some Google Analytics stats tonight, and noticed a link which goes to the Prairie House Manor B&B Innkeeper Passion Statement page, from the Pioneer Girl blog page. This B&B is located in De Smet, South Dakota, which is the hometown of Laura Ingalls Wilder.

The Pioneer Girl site is focused on the fact and fiction of Laura Ingalls Wilder and the author seems to be pretty obsessed (in a good way). If you are into that subject, it appears that there is quite a lot of information there. “Our adventure as B&B owners began in June of 2008 when we moved our family of 6 from New Jersey to DeSmet, South Dakota.  Opening our home to guests was a new experience for us, but the past year has been filled with great memories.

We enjoy meeting people from all walks of life and having the opportunity to share life experiences.  When they walk thru the door they are only guests.  By the time they leave, they are friends that we keep in touch with.

Jenny’s love for cooking and the history of Laura Ingalls Wilder have been used to their full potential on a regular basis.  It’s a blessing to us to be able to make people feel at home when they are away from home by providing a relaxing atmosphere and delicious meals made from fresh ingredients.

We are now living our dream of owning our own business, and using our favorite hobbies, too!”
